In music, by contrast, it is abstraction that has been the norm. Another way of bringing out this contrast between the visual media and music would be to observe that, whereas painters can use as their material all colors visible to the human eye, until very recently musicians in the West and elsewhere could use only a very small selection of what is audible as their material. Even today, when we no longer believe that there must be limits on the material from which music may be made, most music continues to be made from an extremely narrow selection from the range of what is audible.
But if it is true that music tends toward abstraction rather than realism, what sort of abstraction is it? The kind we have found to be typical in sculpture, where the work itself may become an abstract real object, or the kind often encountered in painting, where what is abstract may be not the work but the represented imaginary world? Both kinds, I would like to claim, are possible in music, and most commonly they are present simultaneously. To put it briefly, most music is in part representational, but what gets represented in it are abstract objects.
Much ingenuity and imagination has certainly gone into alternative systems like the creation of serial orders composed of 12 neutral tones, but I remain unconvinced that these experiments have justified the dismantling of one of the greatest inventions of mankind, the tonal system.
