Nellie cried as Nan stepped down. Her hands shaking in anticipation, Nan undid the brown paper. 29 • 4 • The Prowler When the children saw the contents, they groaned in disappointment. Sitting on the paper were four old-fashioned casters for chair legs! " Nellie said as she wrapped up the casters again and replaced them on the closet shelf. "There's still the attic," Nan said almost cheerfully. " Charlie exclaimed. The attic stairs were narrow, rickety, and very winding. The children had to be extra careful climbing them.
Bert asked the girls. "No, we've already made plans to have a cookie sale," Nan said. "We've just got to raise some money for the new gym, although—" She and Flossie were tempted to put the sale off. " Bert asked again. Nan shook her head firmly. "We can't," she said. " "You made two promises. You made one to Mrs. Marden, too," Bert answered. Nan curled her lower lip. "I know," she said, feeling guilty. "Good luck anyway," she told the boys. The school building was deserted, and somehow the quiet made the empty old house seem more mysterious than ever.
