It still presumes that there are two forms of change which exist as alternative categories (the dichotomous assumption) and it still presumes that information resides in, either 'genetic make-up' or 'environment' (the preformationist assumption). In both cases the form of thinking is identical. As a result we are stuck with the problems they cause. Whose side are you on? One effect of accepting this dichotomous thinking is that it has polarized opinion as to the relative importance for devel­ opment of these two sorts of factors. This is not implied by neo-Darwinism, but is commonplace nevertheless.
